Like a train, it may have been slow to start; but now it is gaining momentum.
This is the last year to get the full Medicare Incentive Payment, so call your local RECs and AMA to get help with choosing, implementing and using EHRs. SV

January 3rd was the one year anniversary of the start of registration for the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs. Over the past year, there has been a tremendous amount of interest in the incentive programs as providers across the country have implemented EHRs. Year one highlights include:
43 states have started their Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs
Over 176,000 people have registered for the Medicare and/or Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs
Over $2.5 billion has been paid in incentive payments to eligible professionals (EPs) and eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAHs) across the country

The Medicare EHR Incentive Program: Last day to attest for 2011 (Calendar Year)
February 29, 2012 is the last day for eligible professionals to register and attest to receive an Incentive Payment for calendar year (CY) 2011.
The Medicare EHR Incentive Program will provide incentive payments to eligible professionals, eligible hospitals, and CAHs that demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR technology.
Participation began in 2011.
Eligible professionals can receive up to $44,000 over five years under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. There's an additional incentive for eligible professionals who provide services in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HSPA).
To receive full Medicare benefits, you will need to be using your EHR in a meaningful manner by October 1, 2012.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is hosting a free Open House to educate physicians about electronic health records. Learn how NYC REACH can help doctors adopt electronic health records, receive discounted EHR programs, and meet the requirements for Meaningful Use incentives. As the second NYC REACH doctor to successfully attest for Medicare Meaningful Use, Dr. Sal Volpe will share his experience on EHR adoption and implementation. He will be receiving his first payment of $18,000.
You will hear about Meaningful Use and the EHR adoption process, ask Dr. Volpe questions on his experience, and view demos from our three preferred EHR vendors- eClinicalWorks, MDLand, and Greenway.

NYeC Regional Extension Center Rapidly Approaching Capacity
If you are NYS primary care physician practicing outside the five boroughs be sure to contact NYeC before their subsidized grants are exhausted. SV
In just a short period of time, the NYeC Regional Extension Center (REC) has helped 2857 primary care providers progress toward Meaningful Use—more than half the total number it is subsidized to assist through its federal grant.
As the federally designated REC for New York State, NYeC has a grant to provide subsidized services to 5107 primary care providers. As of today, there are only 2250 slots left to receive federal assistance, and providers continue to sign up at a rapid pace—as many as 200 per week.
For providers who are already live on an EHR, REC service is free if they sign up before August 31, 2011. For those practices still using paper records, the price is $750 per provider, with the remainder covered by the federal subsidy. After the remaining subsidized spots are filled, NYeC’s EHR-adoption programs and service price return to the regular price of $4000 - $5750 per provider.
The REC has done an extraordinary job so far of assisting providers, with 1500 of the roughly 2800 being live on EHRs, and over 60 individuals having attested to Meaningful Use. To put that into context: approximately 300 providers have received EHR Incentive checks from Medicaid throughout the entire country, which demonstrates the high rate of success at NYeC and in New York State.
Since federally subsidized spots are going so fast, NYeC encourages providers to contact them as soon as possible. The REC will assist any primary care provider, regardless of their progress in the transition to EHRs.

NYC REACH, the Regional Extension Center for New York City, would like to invite EHR vendors with certified ONC-ATCB complete EHR systems to attend one of three meetings we are hosting to understand how we could work together. We are interested in learning how our federally subsidized program could augment the services you provide to your customers, what co-development you would like to do with us, and how we could partner with you. We've heard from many of you that you would like us to find a way to collaborate with a wider pool of EHR vendors, particularly those vendors who were not selected during our preferred vendor process last year, and we are excited to hear from you how we could do that.
To that end, we invite you to register for & attend one of the following

The NYC Regional Electronic Adoption Center for Health (REACH) is a collaboration between the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Fund for Public Health in New York to help make sure doctors in New York City don't get left behind. Our mission is to assist them in adopting technology and methods that measurably improve the health of New Yorkers. Some providers may also be eligible for incentives for EHR use from federal, state, or private programs. Our job is to help offset the transition cost and burden as much as possible through training, education, and links to funding sources.
Drawing on the experience of the Primary Care Information Project (PCIP), which oversees this organization, REACH has a team of experts for all stages of EHR implementation and use. A New York City mayorial initiative founded in 2005, PCIP succeeded in bringing over 1,800 providers live on Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and is now the largest community-based EHR program in the country. PCIP worked closely with the Fund for Public Health in New York to develop a program that educates and assists providers through the entire process of implementing an EHR, from preparing the office to effective use that leads to health quality improvement.
